Prosegur Cash Applies Technology to Its Smart Safes to Automate Processes

We partnered with the multinational security services company to facilitate and modernize the management of its smart safes throughout Uruguay.

More Than 40 Years of History

Prosegur is a company specializing in private security. Founded in Spain in 1976, it is now present in 31 countries and employs more than 150,000 people.

In Uruguay, Prosegur offers solutions for individuals as well as small, medium, and large enterprises. Among other services, it provides alarm systems, video surveillance, cash-in-transit logistics, cash management, and event security.

Its pillars are innovation, teamwork, and customer orientation.

The Challenge and the Project

Around 2013, the company began a process to replace some of its traditional vault safes with smart safes, distributed across the country. A change of this nature requires the equipment to have a permanent connection to the Prosegur network and its management systems.

Working with our partner Teldat, Isbel provided Prosegur with a connectivity solution based on cellular technology. Through the deployment of routers that connect to the country's mobile operator networks, the project provides connectivity autonomy to the smart safes, even in remote locations or for those that change location frequently. This allows them to operate without wired infrastructure such as fiber optics to maintain connectivity.

What Impact Does This Solution Have?

According to Ruben Gonzalez, Head of the Technical and Support Department for Cash Today at Prosegur: "Through these routers we have remote access to the machines to provide support and also to monitor all transactions made on the device."

This works for both software and hardware: "If there is a jam, we can see where it is and guide the customer to resolve it on the spot, as well as manage a remote reboot of the machine." This prevents the need to send a technician to the site to inspect the equipment. According to Gonzalez, one out of every four IT incidents can be resolved remotely, so the cellular connectivity of the smart safes substantially improves service uptime and reduces maintenance costs.

In turn, these smart safes improve response times for clients and offer a better quality of service: "Before, you had a vault where the deposited money was pending validation; today, that money is validated in real time thanks to the connectivity provided by the router and is credited instantly to the client's bank account," stated Gonzalez.

With this new approach, users no longer have to wait until the next business banking day to see their deposits reflected. Additionally, it provides physical security and eliminates the handling of cash and other valuables, since for the client, they become the responsibility of Prosegur Cash from the moment they are deposited in the smart safe.

A Decade-Long Partnership

Over a 10-year commercial relationship with Isbel, Prosegur Cash has incorporated more than 1,040 smart safes. According to Gonzalez, the project will continue to grow to complete the migration from traditional vaults to smart safes.

This is a partnership built on trust and problem-solving, with support from a technical team committed to the client and the solution, as well as a focus on logistical and commercial aspects.
